The Thomas Building expansion at the University of Auckland merges scientific research and academia, fostering collaboration between industry and education. Designed for the School of Biological Sciences and the Institute for Innovation in Biotechnology, it accommodates up to 11 companies and 160 researchers. A four-story glass atrium connects the new and existing structures, enhancing natural light and interaction. The design balances open-plan and modular spaces for flexibility, while a curved solar-glass façade and a softer historic-facing side integrate with the surroundings. Awarded a Green Star 4 rating, the facility supports both research and commercial innovation.
